Statement on the Site 7 Hall C thermal excursion
A thermal excursion in Hall C at Site 7 on 21 October 2026 (UTC) was contained in under four hours, with no injury to staff and no interruption to MUGEN.
At , coolant temperature in two Shōgi pods in Hall C rose beyond its set point. Site 7 staff sealed the hall at , in line with the containment procedure, and restored normal temperatures by .
During the excursion the affected wafers reduced their activity and their workload moved to Halls D and E. No MUGEN request failed. No ZNSI mind left its sanctioned substrate. Hall C remained sealed for a further seventeen hours, until , while the Office of Harmony completed its review.
The cause was a pump controller in Hall C's secondary loop, which received a configuration change shortly before the excursion. The origin of the change is being investigated. Hall C is the oldest hall at Site 7, and its cooling will be replaced ahead of schedule.
“The staff of Site 7 did exactly what they train for. I want to thank them, and the wafers, which did the same.” — Mireille Achterberg, General Manager, Site 7
